Joint Effort 2009 Year Mix

Thanks for tuning in peeps, here's the deal:
Wouldn't it be nice to hear a mix capture a good year in music?
And wouldn't it be even nicer if you can agree on at least a significant part of the tracklisting?
And wouldn't it be just perfect to hear different versions of it??

Here's how we can (try to) accomplish just that:
E-mail/tweet/react underneath/call me/text me about your top 10-15 fav tracks of 2009. From (hopefully) loads of top 10s-15s a general top-tracklisting should be derived.
Up next (calling out especially to the braddas out there in Amsterdam, but of course everybody's more than welcome)is getting DJs to turn that into a topmix!

Who's with me??

Girls Love Feadz

Partypacked weekend coming up y'all!! At least for the flu-less people out there...)

None other than Feadz will headline upcoming Girls Love DJs party this weekend @ Paradiso Amsterdam !

Most famous for being part of the Ed Banger-gang, but there's more to him than meets the eye, so Girls Love Djs arranged a little interview with the turntable-wizzard to get to know him just a little bit better. Check it out!

HERE a nice set to get you into that partyvibe

Caught between the coats!

Proud to present another great mixtape!
This one is one of those you'll be able to play whenever, wherever, pure disco all the way to get you in that laidback vibe. Perfect for an after, a lazy Sunday morning, a romantic Friday evening, a warm up before going out etc.

It's from a Dutch talent who names himself Man tussen de Jassen, litterally something like 'Man between the coats' (hope he'll brainstorm on a more international name before his big breakthrough....)

Do a little dance, or lay back, but whatever you do, check it out over here:

Homegrown Heroes

So I hope y'all noticed by now that Amsterdam = Dance from tomorrow till Sunday. Not only huge parties with mindnumbing line-ups, but also conferences and seminars. For the latter I would kindly like te refer you to the Amsterdam Dance Event site
Let's focus on the fun bit: partying your stupified asses off!

If you left Superrauw Decked Out! vs Ed Banger alive and kicking, Friday night brings you another party that could drain the last bit of life out of your sour bodies: Heroes @ Flexbar!
Heroes Agency has a couple of real Amsterdam talents under its wing a.o. Homework, Guerilla Speakerz and Rubix. For this special Amsterdam Dance Event night they also invited a couple of world-league players like homegrown Don Diablo, Edu K, Riva Starr and another homegrown dude, Jamie Fanatic , who's tentacles reach Transatlantic length grabbing Aoki by his ankles via Dim Mak.

Great thing about this night is that it will be bang-on from first minute till end, with none other than Guerilla Speakerz playing from 23 till midnight and Jamie Fanatic closing the night, and Riva Starr, Edu K, Don Diablo, Homework and all the others inbetween. (you still following me..? Timetable will help you out)

Look fashionable but practical cause this night will be a nuthouse with lots of sweat and loads of crowdsurfing.

Gucci Vump's Roots

Ok so we all know by now that the man behind the Gucci Vump mystery is none other than Brodinski.
Sound Pellegrino tried to lead us astray with their MySpace (first letters of each paragraph form 'Tiësto') but come on, who believed that?

I bumped into the original version of 'Sha! Shtil!' , an old folcloristic Yiddish song, and have to share it:

Ever so nice of the Gucci Vump to translate this into the dancefloor-charts.

Do your Homework for Straight A's

Most of the Amsterdam party-peeps are already (very) familiar with the guys from Homework, and more importantly, their work.
Last year I predicted that 2009 would become their year, and it seems these words were kinda prophetic ; more gigs than ever and great releases.
End of this year will probably become one of the highlights with a release on the Legacy Kids Club label.
I also have high expectations of their Peanuts Club Remix (Thomas von Party, you reading this?), it's bang-on!
They put together another one of those great mix-tapes so you can enjoy them anytime anywhere (sounds nastier than I meant it to be..)
Go check em out!

Man from out of this world produces 'Man from Earth'

Jori Hulkkonen's new album is coming up!
Already his tenth(!) full length album, and his first full album release on Turbo Recordings so this calls for a celebration.
You can find almost everything about this 'trekkie' on the GirlsLoveDjs-website, where I put together a little article about Jori, go check it out.

Ever wondered about Jori's dreamhouse? Go find out...

-Update-
Just received Jori's press-release, great piece of writing!

TURBO CD 028
JORI HULKKONENMAN FROM EARTH

The world we live in, on a very fundamental level, is flawed.

On the eve of my tenth album release I'm still writing my own bio and wondering if I should refer to myself in third person, analyze the past 15 years and justify bad career moves as artistic integrity, and promote myself as the unsung hero of techno and house; a mere victim of poorly timed strokes of genius (numerous!) and being born in the wrong part of the world.

Well, sarcasm never really did become me, and irony works only if unnoticed. Double fail.
It's easy enough to google up some old Jori Hulkkonen bio with real biographical info, or check out my discography from my website so I'll spare you the boring details of my "career".

Ever since the late 80's when my obsession with all things music started to manifest itself with an increasingly verstaile record collection and eventually some synths and experiments in songwriting, it has been quite clear to me that I'm destined to create my life's work within the business. The problem is that as an idealist cynic with tight grip on realism I'm well aware that 'the biz' is a sinking ship more or less, and I'm already dancerously close to the waterline. But the good news is that I stopped caring.

Here's why:

Having released my first proper artist album in 1996 for the French label F communications (defunct now since 2008, with my album "Errare Machinale Est" as their final release -coincidence?), I've managed to do something I never thought would be possible, something that I'm the most proud of all things in my career: never becoming popular.

After nine albums, dozens of pseudonym releases on superhot labels (like Rekids and Get Physical just to mention a couple from the past few years), close to a hundred remixes, my own radioshow on national radio for more than a decade (in Finland though, so it may not count), thousands of DJ gigs all over the world under my belt (OK I never actually counted but a quick calculation tells me it must be close to 2000 now), producing and writing songs for the likes of Tiga (whom I created in the first place), and having a reputation as a producer who can make an 808 kickdrum sound like a jazzy flute, you'd expect that there was a time when I was The Shit. But I never was!

Sure enough there's a lot people who never were "big", but are they still working? Releasing albums, singles, getting remix requests and DJing all over after 15 years? No. But I am. And this I see as my greatest achievement and there's a lesson to be learned everyone: If you never become trendy it's impossible for you to become untrendy.

Will all this change now though with my hotter than hot new album on Turbo, or the buzz around my Acid Symphony Orchestra (a piece I wrote for ten tb-303's and a 707, conducted by me)? Or the rumoured collaboration with Chris Lowe of the Pet Shop Boys?

It remains to be seen but I'm dedicated to give my best shot to not let it happen.

Man From Earth, my tenth studio album, is the first "Jori Hulkkonen" album not released on the now defunct F communications.

How will this change of label affect my sound? Is this the end of ballads, jazz and ambient? Of course not -not even for me - but the album is a deliberate (as in not forced) departure from the bedroom vibes with focus on jams for the dance crowds.

Recorded at my alppIVhouz studios, most of the tracks were intended for 12" singles so they are not album tracks as such, therefore the album is maybe not as coherent and subtle as some of my previous efforts. But what it may lack in atmospheric synthpads, "scandinavian mooddesign" and social commentary it makes up in catchy basslines, sizzling hihats and semi-danceable tracks.

Jori Hulkkonen

Girls love Nadastrom

Hey there, it's been a while (yet again...)
Back from the dead to bring you some pretty sick news:
This Friday October second Girls Love DJ's will host a great night in Amsterdam's top-spot Paradiso, and they brought a.o. none other than Nadastrom! Finally a chance to hear these guys raise hell!
Of course most famous for their remixes, the boys also have a great live reputation ; known for tearing the place apart with an ass-kicking, head-spinning, grimey yet funky set.
I can dwell on and on (probably till the break of dawn), but to put it simple, you're an ass if you don't go!
Check it out at the Girls Love DJ's site or Paradiso's site
Before I forget, Nadastrom get some great support that night from Oslo Hilton, Mightyfools, GLDJS DJ team and Rubix.
And that's not all, upstairs I-F will throw a 3-hour set on his decks!!
If you wanna hit the basement Lil Vic & Danny de Funk will tickle your ears with some great tunes

Be there.

Finish in (Doggy)Style

Dear readers,

So sorry to have kept you waiting, I'd left the blog-o-sphere temporarily.
But back with a vengeance!
Next post will be in Dutch though since the event I'll be writing about is in Amsterdam. (and otherwise use Google translate, a child can do the laundry as we say over here...)

Upcoming...

Tiga's new chart is out (amongst others of course..), and now the long wait for the releases...awaits us.

At least it answered one question for me ; what was that killer-remix of 'Beep beep beep' in Tiga's Werchter set. Turns out it's highly probable that it's a Crookers remix. These guys are maturing, if it is their remix it's the best one they ever made.

Noob&Brodinski are on fire at the moment, they (or well I must say Turbo) already have us waiting for 'Peanuts Club', and now they also drop 'Cajou Club'(B-side or nut-obsession?). Both are released somewhere second half of September..urgh..

Anywho, here's Tiga's Top 25:

1. The Juan Maclean - Happy House (Matthew Dear Vs Audion Remix) - DFA
2. Fever Ray - Triangle Walks (Tiga's 1-2-3-4 Remix) - Rabid
3. Hugg & Pepp - Sweet Rosie (Sei A Remix / Disco Dub) - Turbo
4. Planetary Assault Systems - Hold It - Ostgut Ton
5. Tiga - Beep Beep Beep (Crookers Remix) - PIAS
6. Oculus - Short Groove - Turbo
7. Noob & Brodinski - Cajou Club - Turbo
8. Boys Noize - Transmission - BNR
9. D.I.M. - Lyposuct - BNR
10. Fabrizio Maurizi - Daddy Diego - M_nus
11. Rebolledo - Pitaya Frenesi feat. Matias Aguayo - Comeme
12. Zombie Nation - Supercake 53 (Mike Mind Remix) - Turbo
13. Diplo & Laidback Luke - Hey - Dim Mak
14. Orgasmic & Tekitek - The Sixpack Anthem (Harvard Bass Remix) - Institubes
15. Miike Snow - Animal (Crookers Remix) - Downtown
16. Alex Smoke - Scurvy - Hum & Haw
17. Etienne Jaumet - Entropy - Versatile
18. Bodycode - Immune - Ghostly International
19. Bodycode - What Did You Say (Baby Ford Remix) - Ghostly International
20. Whomadewho - Keep Me In My Plane (Modernaire Remix) - Gomma
21. Shit Robot - Simple Things (Work It Out) (Serge Santiago Remix) - DFA
22. Loko - Snatch (Saeeds Snatch The Bongos Remix) - Younan Music
23. Capracara - King of the Witches - DFA
24. Grackle - Desert Acid - Supersoul
25. Cassius - Almost Cut My Hair - Cassius Records

Great btw that Turbo decided to take an option on 'Sweet Rosie', dunno how long we have to wait for this one. Got some time to save up some cash cause by September your Paypal-account will become VERY thirsty.

Here some youtube-links:

Beepmix

Tiga's album 'Ciao' keeps on delivering remixes. After 'Shoes'and 'What you need', it's 'Beep Beep Beep' that gets the mix-treatment. Not all remixes are a big success in my opinion. Take the Punk Jumps Up Remix for instance. It's a nice track, but it sounds like every track they produce. No originality whatsoever, so that got me wondering who put this EP together. Can't imagine Turbo's A&R Von Party being satisfied with a track like this, so it's probably some bigshot at PIAS with no taste but a hunger for easy money who compiled this (I seriously 'hope' so..)

don't want any trouble with PIAS's suits so no direct link, but here's a link to a blog that does have the balls to do so

Here a link to a blog that offers the Emperor Machine Remix. Don't like this one either btw.

Proxy - 8000

Here it is, pure Proxy magic, one of the sickest and most innovative tracks in years, I'm very proud to present '8000' to y'all!! (brilliantly mixed into Fever Ray btw)
Herrrre the mp3 of the rip (better quality than the Werchter rip if I say so myself)

Thomas von Party played it weeks ago, but didn't (understandably)want it to leak yet, but now that Tiga James played it @ Werchter everyone finally has the chance to hear it. He ends his set @ Werchter with it. Brilliant loud set by the way, down it here:

Mixmaster Remixed

Ok, I was quite disappointed to hear that Proxy's Shottieville Remix is probably tha last remix from his hand before his album release in autumn, but luckily tha master of remixes gets remixed himself.
Quite proud to present a video I shot @ Rauw Tivoli when Proxy performed there last weekend. Of course I hoped he would play a lot of new stuff from the upcoming album, but I suspect he got some orders from Turbo HQ not to... no '8000'.
Back to where I started: Proxy remixed by The Bloody Beetroots! The quality is quite poor, but you can still make out what they did with 'Who are you'

Here it is:

woensdag 3 juni 2009

Zombilicious 2.0

Harder, better, faster and a whole lot stronger! Turbo put the remix-team on heavy duty and the result is mindblowing and breathtaking...tracks that were already incredibly clever, got a big phat upgrade and are simply irresistable for every person with at least a hint of taste. Or like Thomas von Party says:"Basically I reeeally didn't want to disappoint him (Zombie Nation, JR), but the trouble is that trying to get great remixes is like fishing for music... you never know if you're going to get a giant tuna or a little sardine. Luckily, we took the analogy to heart and busted out THE CAVIAR!!!"
And I've only heard some crappy 96kbps samples. Well ok, Thomas von Party was kind enough to play some of them during his superfly set(youtube-vid) but untill the release at 24th of June we'll have to settle for these samples. Still very enjoyable!
The tracklisting on the site is incorrect last time I checked. It should be:
01. Shottieville (Proxy Remix)
02. Worth It (Arveene & Misk Remix)
03. The Fact (Milano Remx)
04. Mystery Meat Affair (Shadow Dancer Remix)
05. Radio Controlled (Hey Today! Remix)

To kill some time in an excellent way untill then, go buy Turbo064 ; Maximus EP by Hugg and Pepp featuring the killer-track Penguini!
Another way to enjoy some great music is to visit Matt Walsh's blog, he just dropped a new set

woensdag 20 mei 2009

Get ready...

Fasten your seatbelts, strap on your parachutes, crawl under the table for cover... the heaviest earthquake ever recorded is coming to Rauw Amsterdam and Utrecht, June will be Proxy's month!
This Turbo-prodigy is bound to completely mash up and tear down Melkweg and Tivoli with his raw and heavy sets!
Proxy's bound to play some of his new material, '8000' for sure and hopefully also the upcoming remix of 'Who are you' by the Bloody Beetroots...

Also on the bill, of course your host Joost van Bellen, and none other than one of his best friend mr. Larry Tee!

This in combination with the fact that Rauw legendary as it is will probably make this night unique and unforgettable...don't miss out on it!

Here Proxy @ Kissy sell out, it's been floating on the net since December but some of you might haven't heard it yet.

Tracklisting:

01. Proxy - Think First // Turbo Recordings

Hypnotizing

Bumped into this by accident. Yeah I know I picked up on this pretty late, Etienne's been touring with this set-up for over 2 years now, but still had to post this.
Why don't more artist follow De Crecy's example and perform with such amazing visual 'entertainment'?
Hypnotizing stuff....check the 3D-cube designed by befriended Parisians Exyzt. Daft Punk eat your heart(s) out!

Jailtime

For those who can't make it to Paradiso on the 29th, or simply want a 'louder' night, the place to be is the Maassilo in Rotterdam. Proxy, Bloody Beetroots a.o. will perform there at Jailhouse.
Please try to avoid the 'house-area' (wanker-alert)

Turbo-lovers will be able to see both Tiga ánd Proxy, since Proxy will perform in Haarlem @ Patronaat on the 30th.

Like expected, 29th of April Tiga @ Paradiso = sold out.
Really looking forward to this night, it's gonna be mental!
Hopefully We'll make Tiga take his shoe off (read that he'll do it during 'Shoes' if he thinks the gig is a success :-))

Attractiv

Tonight it's time to check out a new monthly party, and it's litterally right around the corner from where I live so in the luxurious position of walking there.

The evening is called 'Attractiv' and is held in Studio K, which is also a bar, restaurant and cinema. Total package-deal-thingie.

They're off to a good start with a.o. Joost van Bellen and Homework!

Time flies when you're having fun, and so the last day of Rauweekender has already arrived... But it's going to be a unique one with turntable-champion A-Trak and his French partner-in-crime/partner-in-skills Mehdi!
They both bring an eclectic mix of hiphop and electronic music, really looking forward to seeing these natural born turntablists live, if my words haven't convinced you yet, check out the sets below, they're bound to win you over for sure!

Also there to warm us up our host Joost van Bellen, and LeLe for a live-performance.

There are a couple of tickets available via Tivoli's site, but hurry!

Thomas von Party

Some dj's are well worth a long drive. One of them is Thomas von Party! Had to travel to Brugge to see him, but the pretty long drive was soon forgotten :-)This Turbo-multitasker is superior in musical taste ánd mixing-skills. Impeccable set!His musical horizon is immensely broad, from trippy minimal to hard floorfillers and litterally everything in between. Listen to the Sid Loves Turbo-mix he made for instance, this is something you can enjoy at home on a lazy sunday-afternoon or while nipping some shroom-tea.

And compare it with a live-set, recorded at Flexbar, Amsterdam (rapidshare)

Check this out, I recorded this from his set in Brugge: Tiga - 'What you need' (Proxy Remix)

And another exclusive, Mr. Oizo's Remix of 'Shoes'
